Mormons the recession and a succesful prop. 8.

All people are suffering from the recession, with 162,000 job layoffs in January alone. All people that is except for the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Somehow the Mormon church has been able to spend Millions of dollars on prop. 8, not to mention the gargantuan temple they just built. How can an organization that is based in Utah pay 17.67 million dollars for a proposition that only effects California, not to mention while the entire nation is in a economic crisis. Not only are they able to donate 77% of donations to pass a proposition, they were able to build a temple that is so large and ornate it is almost ungodly. The site is 12 acres, and the building itself is 58,300 square feet. In the online magazine "the mormon times" the church empathizes with its followers, writing about how it is so incredibly hard to handle the recession, especially not being able to buy the children backpacks or new clothes. This church feels that it is not unethical to make their followers feel like they are having problems too, while they are doing fantastic. Although you do have to look at the fact that the temple was probably built nearly free for them. Here is a description of the first room of the temple done by an NPR correspondant "The lobby is ornate, like the rest of the building, which has exterior walls made with white Chinese granite, floors paved with limestone mined in France, windows filled with pastel stained glass, ceilings hung with crystal chandeliers, and doors, paneling, cabinets and trim carved from Makore wood from the west coast of central Africa." It seems that everyone is suffering from this recession except Jesus's fan club.

  1. Though I am a partial supporter of mormonism, I wouldn't have voted yes to prop 8 if I could vote. All the money is from the people themselves, we have a tithe of 10% on our income (though we don't HAVE to pay it), so despite the recession, the relative inflow of money to the church hasn't changed much.

  2. The percentage of money that is coming from each house hold hasn't changed, but the amount of the people's income has changed. Also the church owns TONS of land, and they have their foot in many different businesses and corporations.

  3. Yes, but, in addition to the money they get from tithing, there is the matter of personal donation, and they do have their feet in many businesses. It's no worse than many other things going on.

  4. Well personally I feel that all types of religion are corrupt and are simply used to scam good people out of their money. I think that I choose to focus on the LDS church for the sole purpose that I'm surrounded by it (my grandparents, two churches within a block, over 50% of Utah being mormon.) So no offense towards the LDS religion singularly but I believe that they are no better than a charismatic scam artist.

  5. yeah but people give their money because they want to... it's not a scam the people want their money to help build temples... plus it goes to help the people who are in need... its a personal choice and the people who pay tithing know where its going no need to slam their religion

  6. I still don't think "the mormon times" should be patronizing the people. They paid 77% of the total donations to Prop. 8, which I don't really understand why that feel that is so important or how the gay community is effecting them at all.
