Mormons the recession and a succesful prop. 8.

All people are suffering from the recession, with 162,000 job layoffs in January alone. All people that is except for the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Somehow the Mormon church has been able to spend Millions of dollars on prop. 8, not to mention the gargantuan temple they just built. How can an organization that is based in Utah pay 17.67 million dollars for a proposition that only effects California, not to mention while the entire nation is in a economic crisis. Not only are they able to donate 77% of donations to pass a proposition, they were able to build a temple that is so large and ornate it is almost ungodly. The site is 12 acres, and the building itself is 58,300 square feet. In the online magazine "the mormon times" the church empathizes with its followers, writing about how it is so incredibly hard to handle the recession, especially not being able to buy the children backpacks or new clothes. This church feels that it is not unethical to make their followers feel like they are having problems too, while they are doing fantastic. Although you do have to look at the fact that the temple was probably built nearly free for them. Here is a description of the first room of the temple done by an NPR correspondant "The lobby is ornate, like the rest of the building, which has exterior walls made with white Chinese granite, floors paved with limestone mined in France, windows filled with pastel stained glass, ceilings hung with crystal chandeliers, and doors, paneling, cabinets and trim carved from Makore wood from the west coast of central Africa." It seems that everyone is suffering from this recession except Jesus's fan club.
